Atomic Bomb 'Little Boy' Dropped on Hiroshima
At 8:15 AM on August 6, 1945, the US B-29 Enola Gay dropped the uranium bomb 'Little Boy' on Hiroshima — a city of 350,000 and an important military headquarters. The explosion (equivalent to 12,500 tons of TNT) instantly killed 70,000–80,000 people; by year-end approximately 90,000–140,000 had died from burns, injuries, and acute radiation syndrome. It was the first military use of nuclear weapons in history.
