CNN News Team Assaulted and Detained by Israeli Soldiers in West Bank
An Israeli military unit assaulted and detained a CNN news team operating in the West Bank on March 31. The incident added to a mounting toll of press freedom violations documented by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which had recorded over 220 journalists killed since the conflict began in October 2023. The CNN detention drew condemnation from the Committee to Protect Journalists and RSF; CNN said the crew was eventually released. The detention occurred during a period of elevated media-military tensions in the West Bank, following the killing of three journalists by Israeli strikes in Lebanon the previous day. Israel has been under sustained international criticism for its record on press freedom during the Gaza war.
