IAEA: No Verification Access to Iran Since Feb 28, Uranium Stockpile 'a Matter of Proliferation Concern'

| Iran Conflict

The IAEA reported it has conducted no verification activities in Iran under the NPT safeguards agreement since the war began on February 28, has been denied access to 20 declared nuclear sites plus one additional location, and has not received required reporting on the status of nuclear material or design information — including at the repeatedly-struck Isfahan enrichment plant. Iran's Atomic Energy Organization chief Mohammad Eslami said the agency cannot inspect sites hit by military strikes until new inspection protocols are developed. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called the lack of information on Iran's nuclear material 'a matter of proliferation concern' and reiterated that only a 'long-lasting, verifiable diplomatic agreement' can resolve the standoff. The report will be discussed at the IAEA Board of Governors meeting September 21-25.
