Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Sworn In; PPP-PML(N) Power-Sharing Government Formed

On June 22, 2026, 30 of the 33 newly elected members of the 4th Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly were sworn in at the first session, administered by outgoing Speaker Nazir Ahmed. Following the June 7 election (final results: PPP 10 general seats, PML-N 6, PTI-backed independents 2, MWM 1, other independents 5 — the latter joining Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party), PPP and PML-N announced a power-sharing agreement on June 20: PPP secured Chief Minister and Speaker, while PML-N took Governor, Deputy Speaker, and Leader of the Opposition. PPP's Imran Nadeem was elected Speaker unopposed and swore in PML-N's Malik Kifayatur Rehman as Deputy Speaker, also unopposed. PPP's Amjad Hussain Advocate was elected Chief Minister unopposed; PML-N's Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman became Leader of the Opposition. Three general seats remained pending due to ongoing legal/electoral proceedings. The elections proceeded despite India's June 5 formal sovereignty protest and represent Pakistan's most sustained electoral governance drive in the disputed territory.
