Pakistani Forces Surrender at Dhaka — Bangladesh Created
Pakistan's Lt. Gen. A.A.K. Niazi signed the instrument of surrender on December 16, 1971, surrendering to Indian Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora and Indian/Bangladeshi joint forces. Approximately 93,000 Pakistani soldiers became prisoners of war — the largest military surrender since World War II. East Pakistan became the independent nation of Bangladesh.
