Pakistan Established as Independent Dominion
Pakistan became independent on August 14, 1947, with Muhammad Ali Jinnah as Governor-General. The new state comprised West Pakistan (present-day Pakistan) and East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh), separated by 1,600 km of Indian territory. Jinnah's vision of a Muslim homeland was realized but accompanied by catastrophic communal violence.
