DHS Announces 'Operation Rotten Apple' Netted 2,197 Arrests Across New York State Over 30 Days

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin held a press conference in New York City on September 1, 2026 announcing the conclusion of 'Operation Rotten Apple,' a five-week ICE surge across New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and upstate New York that ran from July 27 to August 29, 2026 and resulted in 2,197 arrests. DHS said those arrested included people convicted or accused of murder, rape, kidnapping, drug trafficking, sexual abuse of children, assault, burglary, larceny, and weapon possession. Mullin said 'Operation Rotten Apple did what sanctuary politicians in New York refuse to do: made the Empire State safer,' and border czar Tom Homan credited ICE enforcement with 'the largest decrease in violent crime in American history.' ICE ERO New York City Field Office Director Kenneth Genalo said 'the safety of the public must take precedence over political agendas.' The operation followed New York's adoption of new sanctuary policies and Homan's earlier warning that the city would see 'more ICE agents than you've ever seen.'
