ICE Says Body Cameras Coming to Every Field Officer — Defends Policy to Withhold Death Footage

ICE said it expects every officer and agent in the field to be equipped with a body camera by the end of August 2026, a rapid rollout that could produce an unprecedented visual record of federal immigration enforcement. But the agency simultaneously defended a policy provision allowing ICE leadership to withhold or indefinitely delay footage release after serious injuries or deaths in custody when doing so is deemed in the 'best interests of the agency.' Acting Director David Venturella said the restrictions protect investigations and privacy and mirror policies at other federal law enforcement agencies, while separately saying Minnesota bodycam footage would be released amid transparency pressure. Whether the public ultimately sees footage from in-custody deaths remains largely at ICE's discretion.
