SCOTUS: No Automatic Bond Hearings for Long-Term Detainees
The Supreme Court rules 5-3 in Jennings v. Rodriguez that immigration statutes do not automatically require periodic bond hearings for individuals in mandatory or prolonged detention. Justice Alito writes for the majority that the statutory language is clear. The ruling is a major blow to detainees held for months or years without a bail hearing; the constitutional question is remanded to the Ninth Circuit.
