Magyar Makes 'Lightning Visit' to Vienna — Commits to Asbestos Cleanup, Joint Cabinets

| Hungary

On May 21, PM Péter Magyar made his first bilateral visit to a neighboring capital, meeting Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker at the Ballhausplatz in Vienna with military honours. The trip was described as a 'lightning visit' after several planned events were compressed. Magyar pledged that Hungary would apply the 'polluter pays' principle to resolve the long-standing asbestos contamination dispute along the Hungarian-Austrian border — a long-running environmental grievance under Orbán that Vienna had raised repeatedly without response. Both leaders agreed to hold a joint Austria-Hungary cabinet meeting later in 2026. The visit signalled a fundamental shift in Hungary's western European diplomacy: under Orbán, bilateral ties with Austria, Germany, and France had frequently been strained by Budapest's defiance of EU norms. Stocker welcomed the new direction: 'Austria looks forward to Hungary as a constructive partner in both bilateral and European matters.' Magyar also discussed Hungary's EU funds negotiations and anti-corruption pledges during the visit.
