FM Anita Orbán Attends NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting in Helsingborg

| Hungary

On May 21-22, Hungary's new Foreign Minister Anita Orbán (no relation to Viktor Orbán) attended the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden, chaired by Secretary General Mark Rutte. Her attendance marked the first time a Hungarian Foreign Minister participated constructively in a NATO ministerial meeting since the beginning of the Ukraine war — a contrast to Péter Szijjártó's era of calculated obstruction. Agenda items included raising NATO defense spending targets ahead of the Ankara Summit in July 2026, defense industrial production, and continued support for Ukraine. FM Anita Orbán held a bilateral meeting with NATO SG Rutte and confirmed Hungary's commitment to meeting the NATO 2% GDP defense spending target. The Helsingborg meeting was framed as preparation for the NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey in July 2026, where alliance-wide 5% GDP defense investment targets were expected to be formally adopted.
