Fidesz Wins Third Consecutive Supermajority — 'Stop Soros' Dominates Campaign
On April 8, 2018, Fidesz-KDNP won 49.27% of the vote and 133 of 199 seats, retaining its two-thirds parliamentary majority for the third consecutive time. The campaign was dominated by anti-Soros and anti-migration messaging amplified through government-controlled media. OSCE/ODIHR noted the election was conducted in 'a pervasive atmosphere of intimidation' and 'an unlevel playing field' that gave opposition parties no fair chance. United opposition parties again failed to coordinate, splitting the anti-Fidesz vote among multiple candidates.
