IOM ETT-95: 1,100+ Flee Violence in Petite Rivière de Bayonnais; UN Confirms Ongoing Artibonite Displacement Wave

| Haiti

The International Organization for Migration's Emergency Tracking Tool Report 95 (covering May 29 – June 1, 2026) documents a new forced displacement wave in Saint-Marc and surrounding Artibonite communities. Violence that erupted in Petite Rivière de Bayonnais on May 26, 2026 displaced more than 1,100 people — predominantly women, children, and elderly — who fled toward Gonaïves seeking safety. On June 1, 2026, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that 'armed attacks' in Haiti's Artibonite department were continuing to drive displacement. The Artibonite department — Haiti's most agriculturally productive region and a key food supply corridor — has faced escalating Gran Grif gang attacks since the October 2024 Pont-Sondé massacre (115+ killed) and the March 30, 2026 Jean-Denis attack (up to 70 killed). As of June 2, the Artibonite has zero GSF coverage despite the force formally launching full operations on June 1; no deployment timeline has been announced for the department. UN OCHA's Artibonite Flash Update No. 2 (May 15, 2026) documented a systematic pattern of gang violence driving cumulative displacement of tens of thousands in the department. The new Petite Rivière de Bayonnais wave adds to a national IDP total that the UN confirmed at approximately 1.5 million on May 29.
