7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Haiti
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Tiburon Peninsula in southern Haiti, killing over 2,200 people and injuring more than 12,200. The towns of Les Cayes, Jérémie, and surrounding areas suffered massive destruction. The disaster compounded Haiti's political crisis and overwhelmed emergency services already strained by gang violence in the capital.
