Canada Announces Retaliatory Tariffs on $20B of US Goods, Effective September 8
Three days after US-Canada trade talks collapsed and Washington's 50% Section 338 tariffs on ~$20B of Canadian autos, alcohol, and dairy took effect (Aug 22), Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada's countermeasures: tiered retaliatory tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% on roughly $20 billion of US goods across 700+ products, effective September 8. The 50% tier hits steel, aluminum, furniture, and clothing; 25% covers appliances, dairy, and seafood; 15% applies to other industrial goods, plus everyday items like electronics, pulp/paper, and cosmetics. Carney said Canada would match Washington's tariffs 'dollar for dollar to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses,' and separately unveiled a C$7.5 billion (US$5.4 billion) support package for affected workers and businesses.
