Trump Threatens 50% Tariffs on Canadian Autos, Auto Parts, and Steel Starting Jan. 1, 2027

Two days after Canada-US trade talks collapsed and Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Sept. 8 retaliatory tariffs, President Trump escalated further on Monday, threatening to raise tariffs on Canadian automobiles, auto parts, and steel to 50% effective January 1, 2027. Trump posted that companies should 'Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS,' and called Canada 'among the worst Nations in the World to deal with.' General Motors and Ford shares fell roughly 1-3% on the threat, and the announcement further clouded the outlook for the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement's scheduled 2026 joint review.
