Georgia Establishes Diplomatic Relations With Nauru After It Drops Recognition of Abkhazia, South Ossetia

Georgia and Nauru established diplomatic relations after Nauru withdrew, in late July 2026, its 2009 recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states. Russia, Syria, Venezuela and Nicaragua remain the only states still recognizing the two occupied regions. PM Irakli Kobakhidze said the move "underscores once again that adherence to the principles of international law is the foundation of stable and responsible international relations."
