IDF Disciplines Five Soldiers Over Photographed Abuse of Bound Gaza Detainee
The Israeli military said on August 13, 2026 that it had disciplined five soldiers after an internal investigation into an incident in which a Palestinian detainee from Gaza was stripped, restrained to a bed with his hands tied behind his back, blindfolded, and photographed. One soldier posted the image to Instagram with the caption "Good morning." The IDF said the detainee had been restrained after attempting self-harm, but concluded the manner in which he was treated, photographed, and had his image circulated online violated military values. Punishments included military prison sentences (two soldiers received five days each), removal from combat duty, base restrictions, and position transfers. Human rights organizations said such documented abuse of detainees could constitute a war crime under international law.
