Gaza Death Toll Reaches 72,736 Killed on Day 942; 870+ Dead Since October 2025 Ceasefire as Renewed War Looms
Gaza's Ministry of Health released updated casualty figures on May 9–10, 2026 putting the cumulative Palestinian death toll at 72,736 killed and over 172,500 wounded since October 7, 2023, marking Day 942 of the conflict. At least 870 Palestinians had been killed and 2,433 wounded since the October 2025 ceasefire took effect — a toll that UN officials said constituted ongoing serious violations of ceasefire obligations. The UN OCHA six-month ceasefire review found that while some 293,600 metric tons of aid had been delivered since October 2025, levels remained far below requirements, and 1.8 million people remained displaced in tent encampments. UNRWA reported spreading scabies, chickenpox, and rodent infestations across displacement camps in Khan Younis, Gaza City, and North Gaza, with rat bites being treated at clinics. Landfill access blockages had caused trash to rise several stories in some areas. The 2026 UN Flash Appeal for Gaza stood at only approximately 10% funded ($400M of $4.1B required). With the security cabinet vote on war resumption expected on May 10, humanitarian organizations warned that renewed large-scale operations would produce 'unprecedented' civilian casualties in a population already weakened by 19 months of siege, destruction, and displacement.
