UN Security Council Passes First Gaza Ceasefire Resolution
The UN Security Council passes Resolution 2728, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the remainder of Ramadan, release of all hostages, and increased humanitarian access. The United States abstains rather than vetoing, a significant shift from its previous position. Israel criticizes the US abstention and briefly cancels a visit by Israeli officials to Washington. Israel says it does not consider itself bound by the resolution.
