Commonwealth Fusion Systems Raises Another $1 Billion — Total Capital Hits $4 Billion, First Pension-Fund Backing in Fusion

| Fusion Energy

Commonwealth Fusion Systems announced on July 30, 2026 that it raised $1 billion of additional equity financing, bringing its total capital raised since 2018 to $4 billion — the largest funding round of any fusion company worldwide since CFS's own $1.8B Series B in 2021, and roughly 30% of all private fusion investment globally. The round included pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and infrastructure/industrial corporate partners — the fusion industry's first pension-fund investment, though CFS declined to name specific backers. Proceeds will complete the SPARC demonstration machine in Devens, MA (now ~80% assembled, with first plasma and scientific breakeven targeted for 2027) and advance the ARC commercial power plant in Chesterfield County, VA, developed with partners including Dominion Energy, Google, and Eni. CEO Bob Mumgaard said: 'CFS is making what once was impossible into inevitable. In the 2030s, we will put commercial fusion on the grid.' The company is reportedly eyeing a public listing within two to three years.
