Treaty of Rome — France Helps Found the EEC
France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg sign the Treaty of Rome, establishing the European Economic Community (EEC) and Euratom. The EEC creates a common market and customs union, embedding France in a European structure that would evolve into the European Union. France's role as a founding member shapes its post-war identity and foreign policy.
