Comandante Esther Addresses Mexican Congress
Comandante Esther, a masked Zapatista commander, becomes the first guerrilla commander to address the Mexican Congress when she speaks at the Chamber of Deputies in Mexico City's Zócalo district. Speaking in indigenous Tzotzil-inflected Spanish, she says: 'The zapatistas are confident that legislators don't confuse justice with charity.' Tens of thousands gather outside in the Zócalo. The moment is televised nationally and represents an unprecedented opening of democratic dialogue with an armed insurgency.
