Fox Wins Presidential Election — 71 Years of PRI Rule End
Vicente Fox Quesada of the PAN/Alliance for Change coalition defeats PRI candidate Francisco Labastida and PRD candidate Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas in Mexico's presidential election. Fox receives 42.52% of the vote (15,988,740 votes) vs. Labastida's 36.11% and Cárdenas's 16.64%. The result ends 71 years of continuous PRI presidential rule, the longest-running single-party government of the 20th century.
