Commission Proposes €489M EU Solidarity Fund Aid for Storm-Hit Portugal, Spain, Italy, Malta

The European Commission proposed mobilising €489 million from the EU Solidarity Fund to help Portugal, Spain, Italy and Malta recover from severe storms and flooding in January–February 2026. The proposed breakdown is €261 million for Portugal, €149 million for Spain, €74.8 million for Italy and €3.72 million for Malta, covering emergency and recovery operations including rebuilding transport infrastructure and restoring essential services after Storm Harry struck Malta and Italy in January and a series of storms caused severe flooding and 18 deaths in Portugal. The proposal now requires approval from the European Parliament and the Council; Portugal, Spain and Malta had already received advance payments totalling over €103 million.
