European Commission Proposes Pan-EU Rail Booking Reform to Rival Air Travel
The European Commission put forward a legislative proposal on May 13 to create harmonised rules for pan-European train ticket booking, a key plank of the EU's strategy to shift passengers from aviation to rail and cut transport sector emissions. The proposal would require rail operators to offer combined international tickets on a single booking platform, provide real-time disruption information to passengers, and standardise refund and rebooking rights across borders. Currently, booking a cross-border train journey in Europe often requires multiple separate bookings across different national rail systems, unlike air travel where one-click booking is standard. The initiative builds on the Commission's Rail Passengers Rights Regulation and aligns with the European Green Deal's goal of tripling high-speed rail by 2050.
