UK Votes to Leave the EU — 52% for Brexit
British voters chose to leave the European Union by 51.9% to 48.1% in a referendum held following a renegotiation of UK membership terms by Prime Minister David Cameron. England and Wales voted strongly for Leave; Scotland and Northern Ireland voted for Remain. Cameron resigned the following morning. The result triggered three and a half years of political turmoil, three Prime Ministers, and a parliamentary constitutional crisis before the UK formally departed.
