Croatia Becomes the 28th EU Member State

| European Union

Croatia acceded to the EU, becoming its 28th member state and the second former Yugoslav republic to join (after Slovenia in 2004). Croatia had completed eight years of accession negotiations after a lengthy process marked by judicial reform benchmarks and border disputes with Slovenia. Croatia was the last EU enlargement for over a decade and joined the Schengen Area fully in January 2023.
