Constitutional Treaty Rejected — French and Dutch Referendums

| European Union

French voters rejected the proposed European Constitution by 55% on May 29, 2005. Three days later, Dutch voters rejected it by 61%. The Constitution, which would have replaced all existing EU treaties with a single document, had been ratified by 13 member states. The twin rejections triggered an 18-month 'reflection period' and forced the EU to repackage the reforms into the eventually successful Lisbon Treaty of 2007/2009.
