Treaty of Paris — European Coal and Steel Community Founded
France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg signed the Treaty of Paris, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). The treaty placed control of the key war-making industries under a supranational High Authority, making future Franco-German war structurally impossible. Jean Monnet became the first President of the High Authority.
