Columbus Returns to Spain in Triumph
Columbus arrives back in Palos, then travels to Barcelona to meet the Catholic Monarchs, presenting captive Taíno people, gold, parrots, and exotic plants. His news causes immediate sensation across Europe. The monarchs grant him the titles Admiral of the Ocean Sea, Viceroy, and Governor of the discovered territories. Pope Alexander VI issues a series of papal bulls (Inter caetera) dividing the non-Christian world between Spain and Portugal.
