Sisi Hosts Abbas in Cairo, Rejects Palestinian Displacement, Agrees to Step Up Gaza-West Bank Coordination

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi received Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo on September 16, 2026. Sisi reiterated 'Egypt's firm stance against the displacement of the Palestinian people or any attempt to annihilate the Palestinian cause,' a statement that came hours after Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the army would 'finish the job' in Gaza and implement a plan to remove Palestinians by sea and land routes. Sisi told Abbas that Cairo, working with mediators, would continue efforts to implement the agreement reached at the October 2025 Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, calling on all parties to halt escalation, ensure humanitarian aid flows into Gaza, and create conditions for early recovery and reconstruction. Sisi said establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital is necessary for lasting peace. Abbas, who briefed Sisi on West Bank conditions and Israeli policies there, praised Egypt's 'steadfast positions' and said 'Gaza is an integral part of our state.' The two leaders agreed to maintain regular consultations and strengthen coordination at all governmental levels.
