Egyptian-Spanish Mission Uncovers 4,300-Year-Old Tomb of Old Kingdom Judge Yunmen at Saqqara

Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the discovery of a 4,300-year-old mastaba tomb in Saqqara's Mariette Cemetery, belonging to Yunmen, a judge who heard public complaints and grievances during the reign of Fifth Dynasty pharaoh Djedkare Isesi. The joint mission of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities found two decorated funerary chapels — one for Yunmen and one honoring his father Ity, a senior scribe who oversaw agricultural lands and offerings. The reliefs depict farmers at work, servants carrying offerings, and funerary rites, with much of the original paint still intact after more than 4,000 years buried in the desert. Yunmen's judicial role connects to the ancient Egyptian concept of Maat — truth, justice, and social order — central to Old Kingdom administration.
