Egyptian Journalist Ahmed Serag Released Pending Investigation After Five-Month Detention
Egyptian journalist Ahmed Serag was released on June 5, 2026, pending investigation, after approximately five months in detention. Serag had been arrested in January 2026 following the publication of an interview that Egyptian authorities deemed problematic. His detention drew sustained condemnation from the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE), and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR). Serag was one of multiple journalists detained in Egypt in the period following the Gaza conflict's escalation in late 2025, as Egyptian authorities restricted public debate on sensitive regional topics. According to RSF's 2025 World Press Freedom Index, Egypt ranked 170th out of 180 countries. The IFJ called Serag's release a 'first step' but noted that he remained under investigation and that dozens of other Egyptian journalists and activists remained imprisoned. Human Rights Watch's World Report 2026 documented continued systematic suppression of dissent, independent journalism, and civil society in Egypt under President Sisi's administration.
