ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy Sign MOU to Route Cyprus Offshore Gas Through Egyptian Infrastructure by 2028
ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy signed a memorandum of understanding with Egypt to route natural gas from Cyprus's offshore Cronos field through Egyptian liquefaction and pipeline infrastructure, with exports to European markets targeted for 2028. The deal positions Egypt as a critical hub for Eastern Mediterranean gas monetization at a time when Europe is actively seeking to reduce dependence on Russian energy. Cyprus's Cronos field holds substantial reserves but has lacked a viable export route since its discovery in 2022. Routing through Egypt's existing Idku LNG terminal or SEGAS liquefaction infrastructure would allow Cyprus gas to reach scale. The agreement reinforces Egypt's strategic energy position and comes days after Agiba/Eni announced the largest Western Desert gas find in 15 years, compounding Egypt's emergence as a regional energy hub.
