Grand Egyptian Museum Bans Oversized Replica Items to Protect Artefacts

| Egypt

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), which opened fully to the public on April 26, 2026 after years of delays, announced updated visitor guidelines banning large replica objects — such as oversized Keys of Life (Ankh replicas) — that risk accidental contact with or damage to displayed artefacts. Museum security staff were authorized to assess props at the entrance and refuse items on-site. The measure reflects the museum's efforts to protect its collection, which includes over 100,000 artefacts and the complete Tutankhamun treasures, as it processes a surge in visitors following its landmark opening near the Giza Pyramids. The GEM has already welcomed approximately 1.5 million visitors since its partial opening in October 2024.
