G20+ Foreign Ministers Meeting Mobilizes $2.9 Billion for Ebola Response; US Adds $267 Million

Africa CDC said 24 September 2026 that commitments toward the DRC/Uganda Ebola response have reached approximately US$2.9 billion in funding and in-kind support following the G20+ Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Accelerating Collective Action to Defeat Ebola, convened by the United States on 23 September in New York on the margins of the UN General Assembly. The roughly hour-long meeting brought together the governments of DRC and Uganda, G20 members, partner countries and international organizations. The US announced an additional $267 million at the meeting — on top of $107 million already committed via the Department of Health and Human Services — bringing total US Ebola response funding to approximately $886-887 million, the largest single bilateral contribution. Other top contributors per Africa CDC's tally: the EU/European Commission (€500M / ~$568-586M), World Bank ($433M), Pandemic Fund ($221M), CEPI ($196M), Germany ($127M), African countries collectively ($110M) and the UK ($105M). Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya said 'pledges alone will not stop Ebola. We must be able to trace every single dollar — from commitment to disbursement,' and said the organization would strengthen its financial tracking mechanism to improve visibility of Ebola response funding. DRC Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka called the outbreak 'a major test for the country' and said fighting Ebola 'is an absolute priority,' noting DRC has contained 16 previous Ebola outbreaks and is mobilizing 'recognized scientific and operational expertise.' European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib said 'health threats cross national borders and require coordinated responses.' The pledges come against a $2 billion international funding target and a $1.1 billion gap outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed to close in August.
