DRC Ebola Toll Climbs to 6,522 Cases, 3,134 Deaths as 86 New Infections Recorded in 24 Hours

DRC's National Institute of Public Health (INSP) reported 6,522 confirmed Ebola cases and 3,134 deaths as of 6 September 2026, with 86 new confirmed cases and 30 new deaths recorded in the preceding 24 hours, and 21 patients discharged after recovery, bringing total recoveries to 1,516. The crude case fatality rate stood at 48.1%, with 86% of identified contacts under active follow-up. Ituri province remained the epicenter, accounting for approximately 80.9% of all detected cases nationwide. The outbreak, caused by Bundibugyo virus and declared 15 May 2026, remains the fastest-growing and second-largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded, behind only the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic.
