Largest Ebola Treatment Center in DRC Opens at Kigonze Displacement Camp Near Bunia

International Medical Corps, with UN partnership and US support, opened a 100-bed transit and treatment center at the Kigonze displacement camp on the outskirts of Bunia, Ituri Province — the country's largest single Ebola facility, part of an overall response capacity of roughly 900 beds across five affected provinces. The center will speed identification of suspected cases and referral of confirmed patients, aiming to contain spread within the displacement site. It opened as DRC recorded 567 new cases and 296 deaths in the most recent epidemiological week alone, with active transmission ongoing in 33 of 49 affected health zones. WFP's acting chief said: 'Ebola is moving fast, hitting people already facing conflict and hunger. Communities are key to ending it, but need support.' Separately, the US State Department announced an additional $242 million in Ebola response and preparedness funding for DRC and Uganda on 5 August, bringing total US direct assistance to over $512 million, part of a June G7 commitment of up to $500 million.
