MONUSCO Chief James Swan Reaffirms Ituri as 'Strategic Priority' in Bunia Visit

James Swan, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and head of MONUSCO, met Ituri's provincial governor in Bunia on Thursday, Sept 24, 2026, and declared that "Ituri province remains MONUSCO's strategic priority." Swan pointed to ADF violence as continuing to restrict civilian movement, access to basic services and humanitarian operations in the province, alongside the ongoing Ebola outbreak. He said MONUSCO has deployed mobile operational bases and rapid response units and mobilized logistics to support the medical response, including facilitating team mobility and providing security for health facilities.
