European Commission Authorizes Pfizer-BioNTech XFG-Adapted COVID-19 Vaccine
The European Commission granted marketing authorization for Pfizer and BioNTech's 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine formula targeting the XFG (JN.1-lineage 'Stratus') variant, for use in individuals 6 months and older across all 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. The authorization followed a 23 July 2026 positive opinion from the EMA's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), itself built on the EMA Emergency Task Force's May 2026 recommendation that XFG-targeted vaccines would offer the best protection against currently circulating JN.1 descendants, including BA.3.2. Pfizer and BioNTech said they had already begun manufacturing the monovalent XFG-adapted vaccine at risk to ensure supply ahead of the autumn/winter respiratory season. The move mirrors the FDA's parallel recommendation that U.S. 2026-2027 formula vaccines also target XFG.
