Search Operations Wind Down at 289 Dead; Gilinski Family Pledges $48 Million
One week after the earthquake, Colombia's confirmed death toll reached 289 with 143 people still missing, as search-and-rescue operations wound down and the response shifted toward sheltering displaced families and long-term reconstruction. More than 185,000 people across 15 departments and 450 municipalities were affected, with 26,945 homes destroyed and 127,557 damaged. The billionaire Gilinski family pledged COP 150 billion (about $48 million) toward rebuilding hospitals and schools in Cali, one of the hardest-hit cities alongside Pereira and Quibdó.
