Temucuicui Community Files Formal Accusations of Evidence Planting and Excessive Force Against Police
On May 15, 2026, the Mapuche community of Lof Temucuicui formally accused Chilean police of planting evidence and using excessive force during the May 14 armed raid on their community school. The community's legal representatives filed formal complaints alleging that Carabineros officers fired over 400 rounds in civilian-populated areas and that evidence presented by police to justify the operation was fabricated. The accusations formed part of a pattern documented since a May 6 raid in which a pregnant community member was arrested at gunpoint. The Temucuicui community — historically one of the most prominent land-rights claimants in Araucanía — has faced repeated security operations under the state of emergency that has governed the region since 2022. The formal accusations come as President Kast's government applies a hardline security posture in Araucanía, continuing and expanding the emergency powers his predecessor Gabriel Boric maintained. Human rights groups and Mapuche organizations have called for an independent investigation into the raids.
