Chilean Police Storm Lof Temucuicui Community School in Armed Raid — Community Alleges 400+ Shots Fired
On May 14, 2026, Chilean police conducted an armed raid on the community school and nursery of Lof Temucuicui, a Mapuche community in the Ercilla area of Araucanía. The Temucuicui community alleged that police fired over 400 rounds during the assault on the educational facility, which serves community children. The raid came eight days after a May 6 operation during which a pregnant Temucuicui woman was arrested amid gunfire and tear gas inside community territory. Both operations took place under Chile's continuous state of emergency in La Araucanía — in effect since May 2022 — which grants expanded military and police powers in the region. The Temucuicui community has been a focal point of the ongoing Mapuche territorial conflict, which involves disputes over ancestral land rights against forestry companies and the Chilean state. The community accused security forces of applying disproportionate force against a civilian educational setting, framing the raids as deliberate intimidation.
