Allende Inaugurated as President of Chile
Salvador Allende is inaugurated as Chile's 29th president after Congress confirms him by 153 votes to 35. He becomes the first Marxist to be democratically elected to the presidency in Latin America. Allende pledges to pursue a 'Chilean road to socialism' through legal and constitutional means, without expropriating small landowners and respecting civil liberties.
