Salvador Allende Wins Presidential Election
Salvador Allende of the Popular Unity coalition wins Chile's presidential election with 36.2% of the vote, defeating rightist Jorge Alessandri (34.9%) and Christian Democrat Radomiro Tomic (27.8%). Because he lacked an outright majority, Chile's Congress had to ratify his victory. Allende became the world's first freely elected Marxist head of state.
