Morocco Disperses 294 Migrants Regrouping Near Fnideq

| Ceuta / Schengen Crisis

Moroccan security forces, backed overnight by Royal Navy fast boats and surveillance drones, break up a group hiding in a mountainous area outside Fnideq (Castillejos) that appeared to be preparing a fresh attempt to reach Ceuta. Moroccan media report 294 arrests — 46 Moroccan nationals and 248 from sub-Saharan Africa. The operation, the first sizeable regrouping attempt since the July 30-31 mass crossing, revives Schengen-suspension debate among the EU states already applying border checks against Spain, even though Tajani had floated lifting Italy's checks if no new surge materialised after August 15.
