NGO Puts Death Toll at 141, Disputing Official Count

|Ceuta / Schengen Crisis

Migrant-rights NGO Caminando Fronteras, which tracks crossing deaths via hospital and morgue monitoring across northern Morocco, said the true toll from the Ceuta crossing had reached 141 — 78 bodies recovered in Spanish waters and 63 in Moroccan waters — well above Spain's then-official count of 72-100. Spanish officials confirmed the NGO's figures to broadcaster Cadena SER without formally adopting them as the state count, and classified the deaths under the 'multiple victims' protocol normally reserved for mass-casualty disasters, a first for this kind of incident. The Moroccan Association for Human Rights said it was still unable to produce a closed list of victims' identities and nationalities, and the number of people still missing remained unknown.
