Metro Line 2: Viaducto and Chabacano Stations Closed — Full Segment Suspended Through June 3
Mexico City's Metro operator (STC) announced on Friday, May 29 the most significant Line 2 disruption yet in the World Cup renovation program: Viaducto and Chabacano stations were closed at 8:00 PM, joining the already-suspended San Antonio Abad, Portales, and Nativitas stations in a contiguous segment closure. To partially maintain connectivity, the STC established two special circuit routes: Tasqueña–Xola and Pino Suárez–Cuatro Caminos, operating during nights from May 29 through June 3. Free RTP (Red de Transporte de Pasajeros) bus service was deployed to bridge the Xola–Pino Suárez gap. Full regular service on the segment is scheduled to resume June 4 at 5:00 AM — one week before the World Cup opening match at Estadio Ciudad de México. Line 2 is strategically critical for the World Cup: it runs from Cuatro Caminos in the north through the historic center and south toward Tasqueña, with connections at the Ermita and General Anaya stations that serve as interchange points for bus routes to Estadio Ciudad de México. The accelerated final renovation work targeted tile replacement, lighting modernization, accessibility ramps, and digital signage upgrades in the closed stations. Commuters and businesses in the southern alcaldías of Coyoacán and Iztapalapa bore the heaviest disruption impact.
