LGBTQ+ Marches Fill CDMX Streets on International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

Mexico City observed the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOTB, May 17) with a citywide wave of marches and events. Key mobilizations included 'Encendido de Luces 2026' — a symbolic lighting event calling attention to discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ persons — 'Bailando contra la Transfobia,' which marched against the criminalization of sex workers and the trans community, and the forum 'Tus Odios nos Están Matando,' focused on legal equality and inclusion. A Vyshyvanka cultural solidarity march and a cancer-prevention awareness walk were also registered. Authorities catalogued at least 2 formal marches, 12 public concentrations, 5 cycling rides, 3 motorcycle rides, and 26 cultural-leisure events citywide for the day. Traffic disruptions were concentrated in the Cuauhtémoc and Miguel Hidalgo boroughs. CDMX remains a regional reference for LGBTQ+ rights: it became the first jurisdiction in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage (December 2009, effective March 2010) and its June Pride March consistently draws over one million participants, ranking among the largest in the Americas.
